This letter was written by the author to the relative of a patient who was critically ill.A true incident.
Dear Son,
I am sending this message in the capacity of a Doctor and Human who has always been at home with death , dying and the ill .Infact only on fewer occasions , I have been with healthy people.I understand and empathise with you during this difficult time when a critical illness has hit your near and dear who was in apparent good health till yesterday. Being one person who has been an innocent spectator ( inspite of being a Doctor) to many deaths , I have learnt that we should actively accept what is happening now. Well the best of medical treatment is being offered to your relative by a dedicated team of Doctors who are professionally excellent and committed . Remember one truth my son “ Science will do it’s best . But the Doctor only treats whereas HE only cures. “ Dr George Bernard Shaw had written these famous words “ Every physician should display this board on his clinic door” I too am mortal “. Doctors are only messengers of the Creator and even these messengers meet their Waterloo even when it comes to themselves or their dear ones.The battle to save your relative’s life is being fought by the crusaders of health care.All things are wrought by prayer than even Tennyson dreamt off. Pardon me if I have been blunt but this is the time when you should be calm and be a source of courage to all your loved ones who are also tensed and worried about the outcome..All of us in our family and the medical fraternity will join you and your family in their prayers to get your relative back on track. Till then, Pray and Pray. Your prayers will be answered.Do not lose hope. Light the flame of optimism within your heart and pray with dedication. Surrender to HIM who will instruct HIS messengers to do the best for your beloved one . ”
From a Doctor to whom life has never been a bed of Roses and who always felt comfortable on a throne of thorns.
